The Contours Retopology tool is an addon for Blender that provides quick and easy ways retopologize cylindrical forms. Use cases include organic forms, such as arms, legs, tentacles, tails, horns, etc.

The tool works by drawing strokes perpendicular to the form to define the contour of the shape. Immediately upon drawing the first stroke, a preview mesh is generated, showing you exactly what you’ll get. You can draw as many strokes as you like, in any order, from any direction.

        Interesting, so for pricing, will the pricing for the whole bundle still be this price and people who buy this will just download it as an update? Or (what I presume) is that each plugin will be sold separately with there own pricing and the bundle will be sold with everything together but at a lower price (than buying everything one at a time).

        $35 isn’t so bad, but I doubt I could afford buying a $80 bundle :/ – Sucks being a student.

        Also with the google summer of code and the promise of their being an automated/interactive retopology tool, should I be worried that these addons will be a bit obsolete? Or are they going to work with the new feature?

          As long as sales support development, our plan is to keep the price stable for the whole bundle. If for example though, we need to raise the price for the bundle…eg from 35 to 40, those who have purchased in past are grandfathered and get updates for free. As long as this is sustainable, we have no need to raise prices or sell separately or penalize those have supported us from the beginning :) the truth is that the price you pay is for polish and stability. The core dev of concepts and functionality is such a small part of the workload!

          Re gsoc. Im sure auto retopo will solve many peoples needs however contours is meant to accelerate manual retopo. If we become obsolete by progress then thats just how the world works. Until then we fill a gap in blender function with a solid tool thats stable and easy to use!

      Once you’ve drawn out the strips they get converted to mesh geometry simply by pressing Enter. From there you can begin filling in the gaps. Filling gaps is quite quick. The hard part is mapping out the routes for the topology, which is what polystrips does.

        bridge edge loops ftw! Ctrl+E and check out the command, you need two edge loops with the same number of vertices and then the engine will connect them and fill them together. You can use different numbers of vertices, too, but then you get nastiness.

      We’re working to get the Polystrips beta out in the next few days. Then the actual release will be made some time after that depending on the response and any issues that’re found.

      Polystrips will sold as a separate add-on, but Contours owners will get the first version free upon release.

    i just bought the Contours Tool, downloaded V 1.1.01 from the Blendermarket and apparently ran into the same issue relating to my Version of Blender 2.71. So i searched the forums for the beta that should be compatible to 2.7x releases, right?
    Unfortunately the Dropbox Link above leads to a empty Dropbox, at least for me :-)

    Before i step back to 2.6x I’d like to ask where i could get the beta currently?

      Never mind! No problem with versions. OSX just seems to not like .zip installation and couldn’t locate the after installation. The standard way of moving the entire folder to the addons Folder worked fine! Sorry for bothering.

      I’m having a bit of trouble deciphering what your comment actually means. Are you having trouble installing Contours? Be sure that you select the .zip file when installing, not the extracted folder. If you no longer have a .zip (some browsers auto extract) then you just need to rezip the folder before installing it in Blender.

      I realize this is a bit cumbersome at times, but it’s just the way installing add ons in Blender currently works.

        yAy im back, while I can’t work out how to install contours, I finally understand blenders environment, took 2 weeks tho.

        :( downside tho. I was tempted to use 3dmax, given the mesh 3d max, to blender makes it easy for me, given its free.

        some complex things I use in 3dmax

        But mostly paint and lighting, and so forth seem easier in blender.

        I would like a better install of contours, so far I can install other things, but contours in general as been pain in arse to install.

    Hi, i’m having trouble while installing Polystrips (it is the second release version although the first one behaved in the same way) on Blender 2.7 – i installed it using the .zip package using the ‘Install from file’ option. Upon restarting Blender, the ‘Polystrips’ section appears within the ‘Retopology’ tab but it remains empty. Whenever i switch into Edit Mode after choosing just a single object, a ‘No 2nd object’ information appears within the Polystrips sub-window; After choosing two objects and switching into the Edit Mode, there are no options at all appearing within Polystrips sub-window. Am i doing something wrong?

      Hey Tom,

      Did you uninstall any previous versions of the add-on before this? Also, could you try uninstalling Contours just in case if you have it? We have made the two to work seamlessly together, but it’s possible Contours will need a small update before the two work perfectly.

Eventually i uninstalled Blender with all its add-ons and settings and ran the whole installation anew together with installing Polystrips from within Blender, using the latest .zip package; Unfortunately, i get the same result. I’m running Blender on Windows 7, if that might help clarifying anything at all!

          To help troubleshoot further I think it’d be best to start a forum thread in the Support Tab

          Comments start to lose threading after too many replies.

          Could you go ahead and start a thread and include screenshots of the Polystrips toolbar, objects, any error messages in the console, and anything else that’s relevant?

    Still seeing tons of lag with polystrips, even when i try to retopologize something very simple, such as a test cube that has been subdivided a number of times with nothing else in the screen. Often I get an error when I try to lay down the third polystrip segment and it says it has tried to divide by zero. I really want this to work but it is so sluggy for me, still. This is the new version I am using. I have tried the following: Uninstalling and reinstalling polystrips, and uninstalling all other addons to see if there is some weirdness causing a conflict. Neither worked. :(

      Hey Bartosz, this is due to an API change that will actually greatly increase the speed of Contours (hopefully). You’ll need to wait a bit longer before using Contours with the development build of Blender. We’re working on a fix now, it’s just a matter of adding it.

    Im using Blender 2.72b, and im working on a 2.000.000 tris OBJ model generated from ZBrush. This model are not a unique piece of model, it have at least 10 pieces and are not closed caps.

    Almost all the time the retopology tool crash when Im using it on this model. I am working on merging it all in one piece with Boolean process to test the tool on one big piece of model and see if it will continue to crash or not…

      Hey etienne,

      Could you give me a screenshot of the error you’re getting when it crashes? Also, I would suggest to just fill the caps rather than using booleans to join the objects. That may be much faster, although may not be sufficient, depending on the model its self.

      If you can tell me what the error is I can try and help you further.

    Really like this addon and polystrips. Here’s a new feature I’d like to suggest for contours. Have a way to rotate the vertices around the axis of the cylinder shape. For instance, when connecting an arm I retopologized using contours to a torso I already have retopologized, the bridging faces I make between the two meshes usually end up cutting diagonally. It’d be nice to be able to rotate the contours cylinder shape along its cylinder axis to line up its rows with the rows it will be connecting to for smoother edge flow of the final retopology.

      You can already do this. Just select the stroke and use the Left/Right arrow keys to shift it around the cylindrical shape :)

    I installed it manual by putting everything from the 1.20 zip (which ich the one i can download) to the blenderfoundation/blender/2.73/scripts/addons order.

    doesnt work.

    i tried to install it per blender from the addons tab by clicking the zip file.

    doesn’t work.

    what should i do and where can i download the 1.21 update?

      Hey tobias, please be sure to completely uninstall the previous version first. Sometimes Blender’s “replace” doesn’t always work, in my experience

      If you’ve done that, and installed 1.2.2, you’re still getting the error with:
      indexerror:BMElemSeq[index]:outdated internal index table, run ensure,_lookuo_table()first?

      This is an issue on some machines (generally Windows). Since you installed from Github you can go in and just modify the first few lines in For example, where it says “from lib import common_drawing”, change it to “from .lib import common_drawing”. This should make it work.

      This has been fixed in the upcoming RetopoFlow, which will replace the Bundled version of Contours/Polystrips.

          Ah strange. I can troubleshoot this more when I’m back in the office, I’m on a train at the moment.

          Alternatively, if you’d like to purchase a copy (as opposed to getting it from Github) then I can send you an updated version with the changes.

And I read somewhere that you are merging the two tools into one in a near future. Do I then have to buy the new “merged” package, or will it be free if I bought the two addons beforehand?

    Is there any option to make straight line/stroke? Like let say in photoshop you have to hold shift to draw straight line from point to point. I think that this would be very useful. Next question is: When RetopoFlow be availible because I can’t wait! Contours is so far the best addon (and I’ve been using blender before it went GPL). Congrats!

      A straight line in Contours? All lines are straight…maybe I’m not following but I’m confused by what you’re asking for.

      RetopoFlow will hopefully be available in the coming weeks. A few bad bugs got introduced in Blender 2.73, so we’re fixing those :)

    I am trying out my first retopology using this really excellent looking tool. A quick question – The mesh i built up is bogging down my computer ( macbook pro core i7 16 gb RAM), such that the tool is unresponsive often, or else runs into faults and loses everything i was working on. Are you aware of any tips for how to optimize a very high poly mesh to make it possible to only work on sections at a time without slowing down the computer to unresponsive levels ?

      Hey Kristian,

      Is it a dynamic topology or multi-resolution sculpt? If it’s multires, then you can lower the resolution down, so long as the form is maintained. The smaller details are not necessary during retopology.

      Could you share a screenshot or .blend of your model for me to test?

    Jonathan, it was a multi-resolution approach, but when i ran into frustrations with it, i deleted it and started again with Dynamic Retopo. Im very new to high res modelling in blender, and it turns out that Dynamic Retopo is a much better tool for me. i did a quick test with your tools and it worked great. thanks !

        I bought both countours and polystrips. They are both really great, but im not getting a workflow for combining them. Have you done any sample videos showing how you combine them to generate a single mesh? I am still trying to get the hang of polystrips — i cant figure out yet how to get a whole surface (for instance, a cheek or a pectoral muscle), but its a really promising tool.

      Hey brad,

      I suspect (although am not certain) that the issue is because of the “-master” in the folder name. Try removing that from the folder name and then trying it. The “-master” is the branch name that’s automatically added by Git, but that’s not normally there.

          Go ahead and re-edit the first few lines to “from .lib import common_drawing”, and then restart Blender to ensure the files are refreshed. Together those changes should fix the issue.

          If it doesn’t then I can send you another build to test.
